Abstract

Paper reflects on the Christian understanding of the idea of solidarity, referring mainly to the thought of John Paul II and Joseph Ratzinger. It demonstrates that solidarity in the Catholic meaning implies the existence of a sense of actual or potential community. In the Enlightenment tradition, “brotherhood” is seen as primary to “cognition,” making the very idea of brotherhood and solidarity highly abstract. Christianity, on the other hand, ties the idea of brotherhood and solidarity to the “encounter” of a concrete person, the revelation of his face and the exposure of his festering wounds. An example is the parable of the Merciful Samaritan. An important distinction between the two traditions of thought is the different way in which they address the issue of “bipartisanship.” In the teaching of John Paul II, directed originally to Poles, but also reflected in papal encyclicals, the idea of solidarity develops in counterpoint to two elements of Marxist ideology: class struggle and the “recovery” of opponents for the national and ecclesiastical community, instead of seeking their destruction. The former is represented by the presence of reference to the idea of patriotism, the latter, by emphasizing the role of individual conscience and conversion.
